Cozy light read!

An unusual read that feels simultaneously more realistic than most murder mysteries and not realistic in how few characters are involved。 The character development also simultaneously breaches weighty topics (ex: relationships with less-than-warm parents) but also feels somewhat shallow。 This is most likely due to the structure of the book in that all details and descriptions rely heavily on the dialogue, almost as if you’re a newcomer to the town and family and somehow allowed an intimate look An unusual read that feels simultaneously more realistic than most murder mysteries and not realistic in how few characters are involved。 The character development also simultaneously breaches weighty topics (ex: relationships with less-than-warm parents) but also feels somewhat shallow。 This is most likely due to the structure of the book in that all details and descriptions rely heavily on the dialogue, almost as if you’re a newcomer to the town and family and somehow allowed an intimate look at it all but only discover what you need to know as the characters conversations remind them of it。 All in all, this was the perfect “spooky season” book for this October without the horror! 。。。more

I really wanted to like this book, cute cover, great title, but unfortunately, the characters fell flat for me。 I had a hard time getting through it。

Wonderfully character driven! It's rare to have equal parts mystery, comedy, and family drama without having at least one plotline weaken in favor of another。 This mystery manages to make all three work without such a sacrifice。 Lana, Beth and Jack are all intricately written personalities that brighten this whole story。 I hope this has a sequel or ten! Enjoyable, simple read。

Fun mystery read! There was the murder plot as well as a storyline about 3 generations of women。 It was interesting to see how each generation reacted to situations。 It was an easy book to read! I didn't guess who the murderer was for awhile which is good!! This was fun (terrible to say about a murder mystery) with just enough intrigue and diversion。

Ashley Robinson

Well, it wasn’t exactly the murder mystery I was hoping to read during the month of October。 Sort of blah。 No real heightened climax, no intriguing mystery to be solved。 A bit long and boring。

Amy Poirier

My rating is between 2。5-3 but I rounded up。 I found this book to be extremely slow and boring。 There was no desire to know what happened until the last few chapters of the book。

I really enjoyed this family-focused mystery and liked the dynamics between the three generations of women。 Lana I think provided a necessary level of crazy to the story。 It's slower paced but in a good way, or at least it worked for me! I read something that said this was Gilmore Girls with murder。 I am a big GG fan so that might have set my expectations a little too high! I felt like it was a little slow moving and long。

Mary Sullivan

I was so excited to read this book。 I wish it moved along a little faster。

Last book of the spooky season (14) 👻 not really spooky more of a family friendly domestic murder mystery with strong female characters。

You get to help solve a murder, or two, while the grandmother and her daughter work through their relationship issues from past hurts and misunderstandings。 I enjoyed the characters and would read about the next installment of their lives。

I get that this book was supposed to be a low suspense mystery, but I wasn't a big fan。 The main characters in the family lacked depth。 Lana was just a stubborn old lady dying of cancer that dressed good for her age。 *SPOILER* Conveniently, the cancer was gone by the end of the book, so it seemed pointless to the plot。 Beth's whole character was overworked, single mom, but barely even talked about her work。 The daughter Jack just loved the slew and that's about it。。。 it let me down。 I didn't hat I get that this book was supposed to be a low suspense mystery, but I wasn't a big fan。 The main characters in the family lacked depth。 Lana was just a stubborn old lady dying of cancer that dressed good for her age。 *SPOILER* Conveniently, the cancer was gone by the end of the book, so it seemed pointless to the plot。 Beth's whole character was overworked, single mom, but barely even talked about her work。 The daughter Jack just loved the slew and that's about it。。。 it let me down。 I didn't hate it enough to give it a 2 though。 The ending was somewhat what I guessed, but it had a few more layers to it than I originally thought。 It took me ages to get through because it lacked umph for me。 2。75 ⭐️ rating for me 。。。more

Honestly I really disliked the beginning of the book and almost DNF it but I was gardening and so I kept listening。 It got much better and by the end of the book I was really enjoying it。 So I decided to give it 3 stars though honestly it was a 2 at the beginning and a 4 by the end :)

a captivating & humorous who-done-itwith good dialogue & interesting side themes: CA /Santa Cruz/wet lands, real estate, heritage, mother daughter strive and commitment …

2。5⭐️ rounding up bc I liked the grandma。 The story was meh。 Too long & the mystery didn’t really interest me。

Christine Buckrucker

Eh。 It was ok, not page turner。 You have a love hate relationship for both Lana and Beth。 The retirement home piece is really confusing in how it eventually ties in towards the end。 The kayak shack is a fun way to learn more about the characters。 All and all it was a 2。75。

Delightful, fully developed characters。 Someone described it to me as a Gilmore Girls murder mystery。 I could certainly see similarities between Emily Gilmore and Lana。 It is kind of a quirky mystery and there are threads ask throughout the book。 They are beautifully woven into a satisfying conclusion by the book's end。 Delightful, fully developed characters。 Someone described it to me as a Gilmore Girls murder mystery。 I could certainly see similarities between Emily Gilmore and Lana。 It is kind of a quirky mystery and there are threads ask throughout the book。 They are beautifully woven into a satisfying conclusion by the book's end。 。。。more

DNF 1/3 of the way through。

I wanted this to be a 4-star read but it fell a little short for me。 The premise was a good one。 And there was much family dynamics discussion。 Going on。 The mystery kept me guessing at whodunnit。 Overall enjoyable, but not quite as gripping as I had hoped。

Lana (high powered real estate developer, Grandma), Beth (hospice nurse, Mother) and Jack (15-year-old high school student, Daughter) team up to try to solve a murder。 Jack discovers a dead body in the Elkhorn Slough while leading a kayak tour and Lana sees this as a project to focus on while staying temporarily with Beth and Jack for her cancer treatment。 There are plenty of suspects and Lana (in particular) does a lot of crashing about and jumping to conclusions。 Possibly a little too much ste Lana (high powered real estate developer, Grandma), Beth (hospice nurse, Mother) and Jack (15-year-old high school student, Daughter) team up to try to solve a murder。 Jack discovers a dead body in the Elkhorn Slough while leading a kayak tour and Lana sees this as a project to focus on while staying temporarily with Beth and Jack for her cancer treatment。 There are plenty of suspects and Lana (in particular) does a lot of crashing about and jumping to conclusions。 Possibly a little too much stereotyping of all the characters (especially the good cop / bad cop duo)。Not a very complicated read but generally fun。 3。5 stars。 。。。more
